Problem: (Merriam-Webster dictionary) /prOblUHm/ a.a question raised for inquiry, consideration, or solution b.an intricate unsettled question c.a source of perplexity, distress, or vexation
When we do an arithmetic problem, we can find a solution most of the time. But a life problem has several complex solutions, and one can feel stuck choosing the correct answer. Here, the problems or issues we discuss are human experiences while facing adversity. The demanding situations we face sometimes create havoc of stress and associated troubles.
In his book “The Skilled Helper,” renowned author and philosopher Gerard Eagan mentions that we call certain situations in life generically as ‘problems,’ which often have no clear-cut solutions. He further says, ‘All of us face difficulties in living.’
The problem situations can arise anywhere, anytime. We face difficulties in educational institutions, workplaces, relationships, businesses, financial crises, job loss or pressure, political and religious impasse, natural calamities or disasters, addictions of different types, any childhood/adulthood trauma, body image issues, conflicts with family and friends, identity crisis, chronic illnesses, any form of abuse, divorce or break-ups, death of a near one, accidents. This list can be endless.
Sometimes, we get stressed about the lousy food we get to eat at a restaurant or a hostel. The traffic jam can cause disturbances in our minds. Being overweight or underweight is a problematic situation for many. The controlling behaviors of partners, parents, or bosses can raise issues. Being able to achieve personal goals and accomplishments is a challenge for many. Lack of focus and confidence is yet another problem. Self-doubts and loneliness can inflict a standstill.
If all these life snags had been solved like mathematical problems, how amazing the journey of life would have become!! The derivation or solutions are already found and used in an arithmetic question, like
2+2 = 4 or A=𝜋 r square (Area of a Circle).
Alas! Our life problems, too, had these glorious derivations and solutions.

But the problems of life come with complexity and emotional turmoil. Sometimes, we struggle to define the problem itself. It becomes complicated to mention those problematic situations specifically and clearly. We feel stuck and lack the knowledge to handle those difficult situations. Sometimes, we get overwhelmed with several solutions but need help choosing the right one.
The good news is we can find solutions!
Even those individuals with devastating problems can rise to handle the situation more effectively with some help. Though solving the issues or concerns may only be possible in some cases, addressing and managing the difficulties is possible. Choosing the right decision about how to go through the deadlock is feasible.
Problems arise in many ways. We do not wish to have them, but they would not leave us. Instead of running away, let’s get equipped to face them. In his book “Obliquity,” the British economist John Kay points out that the best solutions to life problems often emerge when we sift through possibilities, cautioning about logic and linearity. The indirect approach or obliquity helps in the process of problem management.

Beautiful article, I also want to say, we need not solve all the problems of life. We’ve to choose our problems / battles wisely. Sometimes peace of mind is more important than solving problems..
Even in exams they ask to solve any 3 out of 5.. 😅
Another beautiful way of perceiving life. Thank you Vandana.
