The losses might end with the loss of a precious life.

This is the dark side of the mood disorder called Depression. It is entirely different from just feeling depressed for some time or a couple of days. For example, losing a promotion or failing in an exam. These adverse situations change over time, and most of us get through those sad moments and moods. But the disorder of losses is not the same as feeling blue.

The most common responses one gets from the near ones when diagnosed with depressive disorder :

We, the society, need to pause and consider whether these kinds of responses push the affected person further into the helpless loop they are stuck in. The alarming rate of suicides worldwide, which is more than 7 Lakh 20 thousand lives every year, emphasises the immediate need to eradicate the ignorance and indifferent attitude towards depressive disorders (greater risk of suicide) as well as other serious mental health issues.

Depression is one of the most common health issues worldwide, which can affect any age group, according to the WHO. Just feeling blue or depressed mood is not the same as clinical Depression, and the difference should be understood clearly.

Whatever the cause of Depression,  the affected person gets stuck in the Cognitive triad

Negative thoughts and views about self, others and the world. Helpless feelings and automatic, irrational thoughts significantly influence cognition and action. It is not easy to break free from these cognitive distortions and self-defeating loops on one’s own. The ice-cream treats, going for vacation, shopping, praying, and partying are not the solution. Pleasurable activities may help the person for a short while, but the misery continues.

The unexplained guilt and sense of worthlessness push the person affected toward a lack of liveliness and spirit. Cognitive difficulties make it difficult to concentrate on tasks or responsibilities and to make decisions. In children and adolescents, Depression mostly comes out in the form of aggression, irritation and hostility.

We need to get over the stigma and ignorance associated with Depression for a better prognosis.

The good news is that we can live a fulfilling life with proper diagnosis and treatment.

The better news is that Depression is treatable.

Raise a hand seeking help and find some relief if you are suffering alone. Talking to a skilled helper is the first step toward overcoming your agony. Help someone struggling with Depression and reach out to a mental health professional.

  • Avoid alcohol altogether. It is a depressant. Makes your condition worse.
  • Move your body as much as possible. Exercise helps in regulating mood swings.
  • Observe sleep hygiene. Quality sleep. Not less, not too much.
  • Try to be in the company of caring people. Avoid negative talks and situations.
  • Eat nutritious food. (enough vitamins and minerals, no junk food)

While writing this blog about the disorder of losses, I wished if I could help reduce just one from the number 7 lakh 20 thousand (7,20,000).

Let us cherish every life!
